Hawk softball evens series with Maryland

After a disappointing loss to Maryland on March 20, Iowa was able to even the three-game series at one game apiece as it grabbed an 8-4 win on the afternoon of March 21.

Things got started off with a big first inning, with the Hawks going up 3-0 with Sammi Gyerman, Megan Blank, and Holly Hoffman all getting hits.

“They came out hot, and that’s one thing we talked about before the game,” Iowa head coach Marla Looper said in a release. “We had a lot of hitters in the top of the order set the tone for us, and I’m proud of them for doing that. We also saw players in the bottom of the lineup battle and give themselves opportunities. It’s fun to see that.”

The three were spectacular all day, combining to go 7-for-9 at the plate, and they had 5 of the team’s 8 RBIs.

Iowa also got huge contributions form Allie Wood, who smashed a solo home run in the fourth.

While Maryland tacked on 2 runs in both the fifth and sixth innings, but another 3 Iowa runs in the bottom of the sixth put the Terrapins in a 4-run hole that they did not escape from.

Shayla Starkenburg got the start for the Hawkeyes on the mound and pitched a complete game, allowing just 5 hits. She improves her record to 8-13 on the season.

Iowa will get Maryland again today; the game is slated to begin at 1 p.m.
